In celebration: 25 years

Twenty-five years. Two decades and a half. A quarter of a century. Any way I write it, or say it, I continue to be very pleased that, this year, in February 2008, McKinnon Associates celebrated its 25th anniversary.

It truly seems like only yesterday when I was just starting out: no trucks, no crews, no office, no staff, no uniforms. Just me and my ideas. And, of course, my hard-earned TAMU degree in landscape architecture, several years of experience at a commercial landscape firm, a drawing pad and a pencil.

Over the 25 years, I have been fortunate to work on an amazing variety of projects. Every single one has been unique, different. Some have been amazing in their scope, some modest. Some challenging, some pleasantly easy.

While in the beginning, I yearned for the big, defining project, it seems that along the way, I have learned that I am just as comfortable with the everyday as I am with the wow. Every garden has the potential to be pleasing, nurturing. And I pride myself on not only offering creative thinking and visually dynamic landscapes, but also bringing useful solutions and pragmatic thinking to the design table.

Two and a half decades after I created my first landscape, McKinnon Associates is flourishing. It has been a delightful journey. And one of which I am personally proud. I pat my crew and my staff on the back for jobs well done, and I thank all of you for your support over the years.

See you in the garden for the next 25,
Mark McKinnon

In celebration:
25 favorite things

To mark our 25 years, I have selected 25 images – plus one to grow on – that I would like to share with you. Twenty-six of my favorite things, if you will.

There’s no one complete garden or project, but rather little tidbits of landscaping elements and plant materials that just, well, please me. Here’s the one to grow on to pique your imagination. Find 25 more at mckinnonassociates.com/slideshow/.

One of my favorite things is to use ordinary materials in an unusual way. Here, we used 1” rebar with a customized u clamp as the structural bars for a garden arbor. The exposed metals weather beautifully, providing a strong contrast to the rich green of the more lighthearted, whimsical vines. As well, the homeowner has a lasting structure, an alternative to wood that requires regular maintenance or more expensive ironwork.
